M-MAP Featured by Genome BC

Genome BC highlighted the Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP), a landmark initiative that applied microbiome science to reshape environmental practices across the mining lifecycle. Led by Teck Resources Ltd. and developed in collaboration with Allonnia, BGC Engineering, the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), Koonkie Canada, Rio Tinto, the University of British Columbia, and Genome BC, M-MAP established one of the first integrated platforms for genomic analysis in mining.

The project collected thousands of environmental samples from mine sites and linked the resulting genomic data with geospatial, climate, and chemical information. This enabled a deeper understanding of the microbial ecosystems in soil, rock, and water, unlocking applications in tailings management, metal recovery, water treatment, and even carbon sequestration.

M-MAP’s capabilities dramatically accelerate genetic data analysis, compressing the timeline from months to hours or days. With its emphasis on environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and cost reduction, the platform represents a turning point in how microbial data can drive innovation throughout the mining sector.
