nPhyla Featured in The Intelligent Miner
In its latest feature, The Intelligent Miner explores how digital technologies are reshaping mining supply chains into resilient, adaptive systems—highlighting nPhyla’s Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP) as a leading example.
Originally supported by DIGITAL, the platform brought together major mining companies, researchers, and cleantech innovators to explore how microbes can be harnessed for sustainable mineral extraction, water treatment, and site remediation. By sequencing DNA from thousands of environmental samples, nPhyla enables the discovery and deployment of microbial functions that reduce chemical use, support biodiversity, and improve operational performance.
“The Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP), which is soon set to rebrand as nPhyla, is a good example of that,” said Nadia Shaikh-Naeem, VP of Programs at DIGITAL. “The major mining companies involved have seen huge value from the project, but so have the smaller tech companies, like Allonnia, which can use the platform to build a suite of microbe products and services.”
The article also underscores the importance of systems thinking and collaborative innovation—principles that have shaped nPhyla’s evolution from a research-driven initiative to a standalone commercial platform. As the mining industry works to strengthen supply chains and meet environmental goals, microbial data is emerging as a powerful tool for science-based, scalable impact.
